1971 David Hepworth
Heard him on Danny Baker's show talking about his new book (1971) The amount of stand out albums and singles released that year is ridiculous. Check out his blog for the list if interested.

Hunky Dory.
Who's next
Whats going on.
Tapestry
Sticky Fingers
Every picture tells a story.
Blue.

Just a handful of albums released in '71.

Mark Ellen's book 'Rock Stars Stole My Life!' is highly recommended by me.

I found it almost painful reading, so seriously did he take it all while growing up (as I did). Loads of very funny stories as he rose through the ranks of Rock hackdom too.

Hepworth & Ellen were later behind The Word magazine which lasted about 10 years & stopped about 5 (?) years ago.
Loved that but obviously not enough other people did which I guess is true of a lot of magazines these days.

The Seventies is a very unfairly underrated decade for culture.
Too many customers of Howard Marks poncing around with their 60's 'memories' I suppose.

Yes, I met Mark Ellen at the same time. Another lovely chap. It was when they were editing/writing the teeny music magazine Smash Hits in the early 80s. Met the bloke from the Pet Shop boys at the same time. He was writing for them, then. He was nice enough, but a bit more aloof. At that time you could go to their office in/near Carnaby Street, ring the bell and say "Hello, we're Smash Hits readers, can we come in and meet you?" and they would welcome us in, make us tea, chat about bands we liked and what we liked about the magazine and give us loads of free stuff. Posters, samples of singles, etc. I don't know how long that policy lasted, once word started to get round.

Don't disagree and would add Madman Across the Water and with a Beatles theme ... Imagine, Ram and the album Concert for Bangladesh.

I also bought by first single at the start of the year My Sweet Lord
